Respect For Our Flag

G.I. Joe Post 244's 2003 Flag Retirement.

"Let these faded Flags of our Country be retired and destroyed with respectful and honorable rites and their places be taken by bright new Flags of the same size and kind, and let no grave of our soldier or sailor dead be unhonored and unmarked..."
Ceremony for the Disposal of Unserviceable Flags

Flag Retirement Ceremony 2003

G.I. Joe Post 244's annual Flag Retirement Ceremony
is the largest in the state of Kentucky, and one of the largest in the United States.
2003's Ceremony saw the respectful disposal of over 6,000 unserviceable U.S. Flags.

The above photos were taken by James V. Carroll, Assistant Editor of
The American Legion Magazine, from the National Headquarters in Indianapolis.
We were proud to host Mr. Carroll, who attended the Ceremony
to do a photo spread for the magazine.

1st Lt. TJ Carmichael

October 22, 2003, G.I. Joe Post #244 welcomed 1st Lt. TJ Carmichael home for a 14 day leave from Operation Iraq Freedom.

for some photos of the event.

We Salute You 1st Lt. Carmichael!
G.I. Joe Post 244 Ladies Auxiliary purchased $400.00 dollars worth of products, and members donated items for the troops serving under Lt. TJ Carmichael in Kuwait. The Ladies Auxiliary paid the postage, and Frank Webb and Jan Guinchigliani shipped several large boxes to the troops. The Kroger Company donated $100.00 to the effort.
We were lucky enough to hear from the Troops that received our boxes.
Although their entries into our guestbook seem to have disappeared, they were also kind enough to send us photos thru the snail mail too!
Click Here and Here to see the photos they sent us.

Here's a great story about Marine Gunnery Sgt. Jeff Hyrne, as he was about to be deployed to Iraq. It appeared in the Courier Journal on December 20, 2003. It helps to remind us of the sacrifices our Troops make for us.

We Salute You Gunnery Sgt. Hyrne!

Note: Gunnery Sgt. Hyrne is currently serving in Camp Fallujah, Iraq, where he is Tank Maintenance Chief with Charlie Company 1st Tank Bn. If you'd like to drop him a note, to let him know you're thinking of him or, maybe spread a little cheer from home Click Here.

The Children's Christmas Party Sunday,
